My third most favorite anime director Hayao Miyazaki has called it his favorite childhood book and announced plans to emerge from retirement to make it the basis of his “final film” named The Boy and the Heron. That’s why I wanted to read the book prior to watching the film. Bought a paperback version to gift it to a certain someone, but couldn’t do so for reasons. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
